31.3.08 sun of rainbow

The sun was dancing rainbow stripes along the canal in Hackney today on the way to the community organic farm.

30.3.08 in the details

Since it's Sunday, here's a theological insight from one of the world's great architects, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe:
"God is in the details."

I like his attention to details like windows..., which I think mirror well these little plants from Kew Gardens.

29.3.08 no time

On the Overground to Hackney Central Station. No time to read, no time like the present, no time when the time changes...

28.3.08 tow path philosopher

some paths are ways in, some are ways out, some are a way alongside...

28.3.08 borrowing some peace

I am borrowing this picture from the London Buddhist Centre (thank you!) because I am needing to find peace and serenity for my day in Hackney today. Looking away from this place somehow helps me be in this place more fully, if the place to which I am looking invites serenity and grounding. It's the same principle behind putting up buddhist prayer flags - reminders of mindfulness.

26.3.08 just before midnight

another grey day, at least there's green on the hackney marshes.

25.3.08 Moore, please.

another day away from Hackney - today in Kew Gardens catching the last few days of the Henry Moore installation. Beautiful. You will see more Moore here...

24.3.08 color and order

I like the layers of this and the look of children's building blocks to the containers because of the primary colors. A playful industrial scene.

23.3.08 Easter Snow

If you look closely around the flowers, you might see snow! Happy Easter.

22.3.08 Flapping in Yet More Wind

This is Hackney's version of Buddhist prayer flags - any guesses?

21.3.08 Windy River Days

What you can't hear in this picture is the music from a distant bandshell gusting along the Lea Valley navigation channel, entertaining the swans.

20.3.08 round and round

looking for some new perspective on the wheel of grey days...

19.3.08 out of hackney

some days Hackney looks better from a distance, specifically from south of the river...

18.3.08 I was waiting for the sun to shine

But here is another day of grey. I'm going to have to pay more attention to the shades and perhaps develop unique names or descriptions so that "grey" has some nuance to it.

No time like the present: today's grey is the color of dust bunnies under the bed.

BTW - enjoy that link...try not to be disturbed by someone's idea of a)humor and b)hobbies.

14.3.08 This Time Last Year

I'm not sure if this is cheating or not, but I took this picture just before leaving Hackney last year for Oz. Now I'm back and wishing for snow rather than just today's grey. A girl can wish...

12.3.08 shapes on the mezzanine

Here's a mid-range Hackney view - somewhere above eye level but not skyward...

11.3.08 Yes Ball Games

Just as I was lamenting the little signs on estates that say, "No Ball Games," I saw some yes ball games.

10.3.08 I need a little sunshine today

Oh wind! Oh rain! Oh clouds! Ah, daffodils.

9.3.08 Better Late Than Never

I saw this fantastic bit of graffiti and wanted to plug into the March theme...even if a bit late.

8.3.08 to the Broadway Markets

The market was nice, but the push bike ride to get there and back was better. The olympics blue wall, Victoria Park, new development, derelict warehouses, locks, houseboats, and the gas works. This picture captures the sense of being out in the open with an air or expectation - what's around the next bend in the path?

Winner!

Most cluttered shop in Hackney award.

6.3.08 Cheesy Escapades

Part of living in Hackney is leaving Hackney to explore the rest of the city. All the intrepid explorer needs is an AtoZ and some cheese from Neal's Yard Dairy.

5.3.08 Cornered

There's a sense of not having to choose between the roads less and more traveled...

4.3.08 at the end of the tunnel

Once again, the light at the end of the day is intriguing. This time, it was a like a light at the end of the tunnel. Proof positive that light can work some wonders in the transformation department. Is this the ugliest building or what and yet here its sickly pink approaches something more lovely like the inside of a conch shell. If only the air held a hint of the sea...

3.3.08 Morning Shadows

We are exploring our new neighborhood, watching for shadow and light on our walk to work. It seems fitting to use a bit of black and white as we transition from the colors of the Australian desert to the many shades of grey in our new town.

Evening Swiftly Comes

Since moving back here a week ago from the cloudless central desert in Australia, I've been reminded how quickly the clouds pass across this smaller island. This is evening in our new back garden, as I was watching the cloud move swiftly by.
